Lake Modewarre - linking communities

Photo of Lake Modewarre trackCan you imagine riding your bike or walking from Winchelsea to Lake Modewarre - around the lake and on to Moriac; packing your bag with your picnic lunch; a day out with the kids.  The Lake Modewarre Committee of Management (LMCM) is currently working with V-line to investigate the use of the rail corridor as a walking/cycling trail from Moriac and Winchelsea to the Lake.

At present there is a graded section of track around the Lake starting near Taylor’s Rd, going west around to Lewis Rd. Although presently empty, the Lake Reserve is still a stunning display of space covering 533 hectares, providing opportunity for an energetic walk around the perimeter or an afternoon’s ride for the family.

In the past Lake Modewarre was known as one of the best trout fisheries in Victoria, a great place to water ski, to swim, wind surf etc. Just because the lake is currently dry doesn’t mean there is nothing to see or do. For example the LMCM is currently working to develop better facilities for a group of ultralite mosquito flyers who put on spectacular flying displays. Development requires ideas, planning and funding. The Committee is 5 people; too small to do this without local support.

Now is the time for Winchelsea people to come on board with their various skills and ideas to help with the planning and development process of the Winchelsea to Lake Modewarre section of the trail. People are needed to support the LMCM in the areas of planning, preparing funding applications, assistance in working through the V/line process to help the project to fruition.

The increasing popularity of bike riding and walking, a large scale local trail linking the communities of Winchelsea and Moriac with the largest lake reserve in Victoria, will attract the tourism. Increased tourism means increased wealth for rural communities.
