BTA Happy To Stay With Shire

The Winchelsea Business & Tourism Association (BTA) has responded to recent newspaper articles encouraging Winchelsea to consider leaving the Surf Coast Shire. Councillor Lindsay Schroeter has reportedly said that other Councils would welcome Winchelsea – however, the Winchelsea BTA believes there are many benefits to remaining in Surf Coast.

With the Geelong Ring Road development and the next phase duplicating the highway to Winchelsea, the BTA see Winchelsea as a significant entry point to the coastal region for many travellers. Surf Coast Council has already recognised the potential and the needs of Winchelsea, with the active support of Councillors such as Mayor Libby Coker.

As a growing town, Winchelsea already possesses many key facilities such as a hospital, doctors, dentist, school, railway station, service station, community house, child care, high-speed internet, and visitor attractions like the riverside and Barwon Park Mansion. A supportive Shire Council is critical in the future management and improvement of the town, and the Winchelsea BTA report a turbulent but productive relationship with the Surf Coast Shire.

The BTA commended Councillor Lindsay Schroeter for more than four decades of service to Winchelsea and the Shire, and were quick to recognise his contributions to the town. But the Winchelsea BTA made it clear they believe the future of Winchelsea to be with Surf Coast Shire.
